Samuel K. Freshman founded Standard Management Company in 1961 and was a pioneering figure in real estate investment and syndication. A Stanford-trained attorney, investor, educator and author, Sam helped generations of investors understand how pooling capital could provide access to larger and better-positioned commercial real estate opportunities.
Sam founded the law firm Freshman, Marantz, Orlanski, Cooper & Klein, which later became the Los Angeles office of K&L Gates. He served as counsel for more than 100 real estate syndications, taught real estate at the USC Marshall School of Business and served as an expert witness in more than 80 cases. He was also Chairman Emeritus of Stanford Professionals in Real Estate.
His influential book, Principles of Real Estate Syndication, became an essential resource for investors, attorneys and sponsors throughout the industry. Sam’s principles of careful underwriting, disciplined investing and capital preservation continue to guide the firm today.
Sam passed away on May 12, 2026, at the age of 93. His legacy remains at the heart of Standard Asset Management & Investments.
